Punto Banco

This card game will have you on the edge of your seat.

Punto Banco is a modern variation on the game baccarat. The main difference is your opponent: in Punto Banco you play against the bank.

Punto Banco is played with six to eight 52-card packets. Guests can join in the game sitting at the table or standing. The aim of the game is to reach the maximum value of nine with at least two but no more than three cards.

As a player you can either bet on “banco” (i.e. the banker) or on “punto” (i.e. the player), or on a tie. The cards for both sides are drawn as follows: The first and third card for the punto, the second and fourth card for the banco. If the first two cards dealt to the punto or the banco add up to a total of eight or nine (i.e. a natural hand), no more cards may be drawn. If the total does not reach eight or nine, more cards will be drawn according to the drawing rules. If both sides have the same points number, the coup is a tie and all bets on a tie win. The bets on the punto and the banco remain unchanged, so they may be withdrawn or changed.

At the end of the game, the croupier announces the total points score of the punto player(s) and the banco player(s). If the banco has a higher score than the punto, the banco wins. If the punto has a higher score than the banco, the punto wins. The croupier leads the game, and collects and pays out bets.

Card values
Card values between 2 and 9 correspond to their nominal value. A 10, a jack, a queen and a king count for zero. An ace counts for one. If the points total of the two (or three) cards equates to a double-digit number, only the units digit (i.e. the rightmost digit) is taken into account.

Punto
If the punto has two cards with a points total of

●     0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, the punto receives a third card, unless the banco has an 8 or a 9.

●     6 or 7, the punto does not receive a third card.

●     8 or 9, neither the punto nor the banco receives a third card.

Banco
If the banco has two cards with a points total of

●     0, 1 or 2, the banco receives a third card, unless the punto has an 8 or a 9.

●     3, the banco receives a third card, unless the punto’s third card is an 8.

●     4, the banco only receives a third card if the punto receives 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 as a third card.

●     5, the banco only receives a third card if the punto receives 4, 5, 6 or 7 as a third card.

●     6, the banco only receives a third card if the punto receives a 6 or 7 as a third card.

●     7, the banco does not receive a third card.

●     8 or 9, neither the punto nor the banco receives a third card.
